A student has revealed how what she thought was a simple infection turned out to be a parasite eating her eye from the inside.

Jess Greaney, 19, was living in her university halls when her left eye started aching.

At first doctors thought she had an ulcer, however within a few days her eye had become extremely painful and was bright red and bulging.

Eventually she was found to have a bug called Acanthamoeba Keratitis living in her eye and slowly feasting on it.

She was forced to undergo painful treatments which saw doctors clamp her eye open and scrape layers of the tissue off with a scalpel.

Miss Greaney, who is from Birmingham but is studying English at Nottingham University, was then subjected to a constant stream of eye-drops to save her cornea.

She couldn’t sleep for four straight days, however the parasite is still in her eye, and no one knows how long it will take to get rid of it.

She told the Mirror: ‘It was quite weird, it was just constant pain. My eye was just closing by itself. I couldn’t keep it open.

‘I thought it was just going to be a normal eye infection but one of my friends said: “I’m going to take you to hospital I don’t want anything to happen”.’

Doctors eventually allowed her to continue her treatment at home, where she takes 22 eye drops a day.

She told student news website the Tab that she thinks it was contaminated water she used on her contact lens which lead to the horrific parasite taking hold in her eye.
