California might be ready to legalize cannabis for adults 21 and over, but some members of the Oakland community are worried it will be a job-killer for their street dealers.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle‘s Joe Garofoli, support for legalization proved mixed at a public meeting of the ACLU’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Legalization in Oakland this week.

Street-level drug dealers who are now selling to 17- to 25-year-olds could see legalization cut their market in half, said Robert Dousa, who helps kids with abuse issues in the Oakland Unified School District. He fears those dealers would then start selling harder drugs — like methamphetamine — to even younger kids.

“Many of these dealers are doing it to support their families — they need to make money,” Dousa said.

What should America do about illegal drug dealers being put out of business by licensed, regulated, tax-paying operators? We’ll take your opinion in the comments.

In other news, 22 stings of legal pot shops in Washington busted four stores for selling to minors this week. Zero pot shops in Colorado have been caught selling to minors.

Lastly, more Washington and Colorado voters support legalization today than when the measures passed in 2012.
