All around the world, Windows users are discovering a new icon in their notification trays—an offer to reserve a free copy of Windows 10. Sounds too good to be true, yes? Except Windows 10 actually is a free upgrade, and this really does appear to be the way you’ll get it.

Click on that icon, and up pops a description of how the upgrade process will work. (Were you hoping you’d get to download Windows 10 today? Sorry, this is just the reservation process.) Give Microsoft your email address—or not—and then Windows 10 will automatically download to your computer once Microsoft pulls the trigger.

When will that be? July is a pretty good bet. If you want Windows 10 on a disc, you can probably expect that to arrive at the end of August.

Update: Windows 10 is coming July 29th.

It just lets you reserve your copy as far as I can tell, it's not coming out until the end of July

:-k

Are we gonna have to back up our data before the install, before they finally start it? I'm not so certain I like the idea of Microsoft installing crap on my computer over a network without my direct involvement.

Backing up your shit before any major install is good practice anyway...

I imagine its similar to loading the .1 part of windows 8.1. a huge download then it just installs as an upgrade. But as with any upgrade you may want to take a BU just in case.

So it's just upgrading system components then? Like an SP1 download from windows update? I'm currently using 7, btw so I don't know anything about the 8 to 8.1 process.

In that case, I'm guessing I don't have to worry about my dual boot configuration with Linux.

Another reason I don't like this: I'm gonna want a physical copy of this OS. Sure, it's free, but what happens if my hard drive takes a dump and the time to upgrade for free has expired? Articles stated that it's only going to be free for a limited time.

Its a whole new OS, I dont typically like doing upgrades. I prefer a clean install. But, Im going to give it a try anyway. You should be able to create a recovery disk after the install, like you can with windows 7

Recovery discs suck.

What happens when I want to reformat my hard drive or have to replace it because of all the crazy shit I do? I'm gonna want an OEM disc.

I'm not doing anything until the techies have had a good look at it.

Newegg had them listed at 109

Newegg might have some bundle deals so when it's finally released, I may look into upgrading some of the hardware on my rig.

That's how I got Win7 Pro. If I remember correctly, that is. I believe the OEM disc was seriously discounted in a bundle with my mobo.

Hehe! Well, not quite like "naughty", unless your accent or way of saying it makes it sound like it... as in "naughty" the "a" sounds more like "o"...and Finnish ir pronounced exactly as it is written so "a" sounds like "a". Hard to explain. :D
And Win10 should be pretty good actually. You should watch some vids and previews of it. But you can be sure we all will be reporting as soon as we get it. July 29th is the launch date.

This is my concern. And yes recovery discs are dodgy at best

On a new format/install I don't want to have to install WIN7, then go through some horrible upgrade process to 10.

I hope the 3 gig file can be saved to a USB drive and used as the OS for new installs.

The beta can, I didnt see anything for this update to be able to do that. I was looking, but we will have to see I guess

From what I have read, the icon will stay there in case you change your mind. You can "unreserve" your download by clicking back on the icon.

I wonder if the download is an exe file, or does it do some weird real time updating of files?

I feel like Pony does...I don't mind having the install files but would prefer to wait and see how the first iteration works for others.

I may remove myself from the reserved list. It says we have a year to say yes to version 10 so maybe I can go back at one point and tell Windows I want it...like March next year..
