A gay teen has been forced to have sex with his own mum in a bid to ‘cure’ his sexual preferences.
Gay rights group LGBT Collective, who operate from Telangana in southern India, warn that parents are so desperate to have heterosexual children that so-called ‘corrective rapes’ are being inflicted on gay adolescents by members of their own family.
Relatives – often cousins, but in some cases parents – force themselves on victims in a misguided attempt to ensure they are ‘cured’ of homosexuality.
One teenage boy suspected of being gay was forced to have sex with his own mother.
The organisation said it has received at least 15 reports of ‘corrective rapes’ in the last five years, but believe some victims keep quiet because of the trauma and shame associated with sexual assault and homosexuality in the country.
LGBT Collective spokesperson, Vyjayanti Mogli said: ‘We are sure there are many more cases, but they go unreported.
‘We came across such cases not because they reported the rape, but because they sought help to flee their homes,’ Mogli told the Times of India.
‘It’s usually a cousin who’s roped in for this project.’
Mogli also described a string of cases in the south in which newborn girls are promised to a cousin for marriage, if she is later discovered to be in a lesbian relationship family elders often arrange for the intended spouse to carry out a forcible ‘cure’ attempt.
In 2013 the Indian Supreme Court reinstated a colonial law which banned gay sex, which means homosexuality can be punished with up to ten years in jail.
