DAYTONA BEACH — A mother with five children younger than age 7 — three of them disabled — was arrested after police said her residence was roach infested, to include insects crawling on a sleeping child and on the kitchen counters and bathroom sink.

The house was so filthy that the officer who wrote the report called it “unlivable.”

As a result, 33-year-old Brandy Azad was charged with five counts of child neglect, according to an arrest report.

When Daytona Beach Officer Christian Botella arrived at Azad’s rental house on Thunderbird Drive after 9:30 p.m. Monday, the suspect was asleep, and at least two of the children — both under 5 — were outside roaming the neighborhood and snatching lights from others’ yards, the report shows.

When Botella looked inside the house, he saw other children “being loud.” Botella asked if there was an adult in the residence and the youngsters said their mother was sleeping. The officer asked the children if he could go inside and when they let him in, he saw “several cockroaches on the walls and floor,” the report states.

Botella then entered Azad’s bedroom and woke her up. Azad told Botella that she was sick and the father of one of the children was supposed to watch the youngsters, the report states.

Azad also said she had put the children to bed at 8 p.m. When Botella went to check on the children, the five were laying on two sofa beds, the report states. There were roaches on the floor, the walls and the sofa beds, the report shows. Botella and a backup officer saw roaches crawling on one of the sleeping children, the report shows.

Azad said she does not work and receives disability payments for three of the children — two who are autistic and one has Down’s syndrome, the report shows.

Azad said the house also had mold on the ceilings and that she and the children had gotten sick because of it. Azad also told the officers that she had applied for assistance, but had been placed on a waiting list.

Azad was being held Tuesday at the Volusia County Branch Jail on $5,000 bail.

The report did not say who is now caring for the children.
