The Islamic State hanged two boys by their wrists on Monday after the militant group accused them of breaking fast during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan, said the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights, according to The Guardian.
The incident occurred in Mayadeen, part of Syria’s Deir-al Zour province.
“Residents of the village of Mayadeen in Deir Ezzor province reported that ISIS suspended from a crossbar two boys aged under 18 near the headquarters of the Hissba [jihadist police]”, Syrian Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said to AFP.
He added: “The children have been suspended by ropes from a pole since noon, and they were still there in the late evening.”
A placard explaining their punishment was attached to the bodies.
“They broke the fast with no religious justification,” reads the placard, according to MSN.
Initial reports do not make the current condition of the 2 boys clear, reports The Washington Post.
Observant Muslims abstain from eating and drinking during daylight hours in the month of Ramadan, which began on Thursday.
The news comes after Kurdish intelligence took over an ISIS military base nearly 30 miles from Raqqa, the Islamic State’s Syrian-based capital on Tuesday, according to NBC News.
On June 15, The Associated Press reported that the Islamic State lost Tal Abyad, a strategic Turkish border town, to Kurdish forces. The measure marked a “huge setback” to the militant group.
