A homeless California man accused of attacking women in a fake Facebook warning was beaten up by a group of vigilantes after the bogus assault complaints against him spread on social media.

The innocent man became a victim when he was assaulted at an Arco gas station in Modesto on Friday night by several men who mistakenly thought they were administering valid street justice.

The assault occurred after a female posted a warning beginning in capital letters about a man who was breaking into homes and assaulting women and included a physical description of the attacker.

People were urged to share the post with others because they could 'save a girl's life' by doing so according to CBS Sacramento.

The post also warned: 'This man won't stop until he gets what he wants.'

Modesto police got tons of calls and messages about the man, but could find no evidence that he had physically harmed anyone.

After stopping the man, who has not been named, officers came to believe he had mental health issues as he 'appeared to be not 100 per cent there mentally', the Modesto Bee reported.

Since they couldn't arrest the man, police put the word out that the assault warning was phony.

The police department tweeted: 'This post is false.

'Please share. We fear this man may become a victim.'

That effort was a little too late to help the man and he was attacked at the gas station.

He suffered injuries that were 'not severe' and refused medical help for 'scratches he received'.

The man did not want to press charges and police don't have any information about his attackers.

Police told the poster of the warning to take it down to prevent a similar incident from happening.

Modesto police spokeswoman Heather Graves said: 'We're all for warning others of crimes but you know we want the correct information to get out.'
