A would-be robber was fatally shot by a worker at a Detroit restaurant last week, police say.

The incident took place at Pete’s Grill and Coney Island on Outer Drive and Dequindre, where the man walked into the restaurant, announced a hold-up and pointed a gun at the owner, according to police, WXYZ.com reports.

"Next thing I know, I saw everybody getting down on the ground," Detroit resident Robert Felton, who happened to be inside the restaurant at the time of the robbery, told ClickOnDetroit.com. "This guy was robbing the place. He had the gun on everybody. He was telling everybody, 'get to the register, I want the register.’"

The cook, who was in the back of the restaurant, then pulled out a gun and opened fire at the robber, killing the suspect, police said.

"It was a good thing, because the guy was threatening everybody," Felton said. "There had to be at least 20 people in the restaurant. The guy that works here, he's a hero. He's really a hero.”

Detroit homicide detective are still investigating the incident to make sure the evidence matches a self-defense shooting, ClickOnDetroit reports.

"When you are being threatened with a weapon and you face a split second decision, you make your decision based on the information you have in front of you at that moment," Sgt. Cassandra Lewis of the Detroit Police Department said.

If they serve alcohol, don't ask for a beer and a shot.
