Parents in Bavaria, Germany, recently got a letter from a school asking them to make sure their daughters do not wear revealing outfits because of 200 Syrian refugees who are living in a shelter near the school's gym.
Martin Thalhammer, the head teacher at the school, wrote in his letter that the refugees are not allowed in school buildings or the garden, and are banned from the grounds during daytime hours, reported Die Welt, a German news website, noted The Local.
Thalhammer added:
The Syrian citizens are mainly Muslims and speak Arabic. The refugees are marked by their own culture. Because our school is directly next to where they are staying, modest clothing should be adhered to. Revealing tops or blouses, shorts or miniskirts could lead to misunderstandings.
While several parents were upset, a local lawmaker, who refused to be identified, told Die Welt:
When Muslim teenage boys go to open air swimming pools, they are overwhelmed when they see girls in bikinis.
These boys, who come from a culture where for women it is frowned upon to show naked skin, follow girls and bother them without realizing. Obviously this is concerning for us.
The lawmaker did not say why the Syrian boys could not physically control themselves from following or bothering the girls.
Germany has taken in 100,000 refugees from Syria, but the German government expects the number to jump to 450,000, noted RT.com.
Muez Abu Aljadael, a Syrian journalist and activist told The Moscow Times in January that Syrians are often denied asylum in Russia, which has been an ally of Syria for decades.
