A North Carolina high school teacher had a month-long sexual fling with a student, investigators said.
A grand jury indicted Kimberly Lynne Umphlett on a charge of felony sex with a student Monday, WTKR reported. The 24-year-old former Currituck County High School teacher turned herself in a day later.
Officers launched an investigation into Umphlett in May when a student at her school told another teacher about their alleged sexual relationship. The teacher then relayed the victim’s story to cops.
The English teacher and the student began having sex in April, investigators said. The alleged affair lasted until the day the student reported it.
Umphlett bonded out of jail almost immediately.
Currituck County High School suspended the teacher with pay on May 12 pending the investigation. She resigned six days later.
Umphlett started working at the school in August 2013.
