Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, who is running for president, said today that the U.S. should apologize for slavery.

Sanders made his comments on Joe Madison's “The Black Eagle” radio show.

Madison asked Sanders if he were to be elected president if he would apologize for black slavery in America.

Sanders stated:


Obviously, nobody in this generation, you know, is involved in slavery, but as a nation slavery is one of the abominations that our country has experienced. There's no excuse. What can we say about it? It was horrific It killed millions of people who never made it across the ocean. And it destroyed just the lives of so many people. So, as a nation, I don't think as a president, but as a nation we have got to apologize for slavery, of course.

Madison asked Sanders, “So is that a yes or a no?”

Sanders answered:


Well it’s, I’m not exactly sure what it means. As a nation, we have got to apologize for slavery and, of course, the president is the leader of the nation.

Sanders later expressed his support for taking down the Confederate flag that stands on the statehouse grounds in South Carolina.

Fusion notes that the U.S. has not officially apologized for slavery, but President Clinton apologized in Uganda for the slave trade in 1998.

You're absolutely right. Apologizing for it now would do nothing. Slavery in the USA was something that no one around today was alive for and logically can't be held accountable for. Nor can anybody alive today reasonably claim that the slavery in pre-Civil War America has negatively effected or affected them in any way shape or form. It's a bunch of horseshit.

This is how I think about the aboriginal stolen-generation/land rights debacle in the lucky country. I wasn't around when the discovered the place so dont blame me or expect me to pay for something i had no control over a couple of hundred years ago...the government of the day and that great institution called "church" decided to take kids living in poverty and being abused and attempt to give them better conditions ...again it had nothing to do with me so fuck off.
