A man checking on a friend at a Phoenix, Ariz., apartment found the grisly sight of blood-splattered walls and his friend’s self-mutilated body after he allegedly decapitated his wife and their two dogs.

A call to 911 alerted Phoenix police officers of the bloodied crime scene at 9:45 a.m. Saturday when the neighbor said the suspect answered the door naked, authorities said.

The unidentified 43-year-old had apparently amputated his left arm and gouged out his right eye, the neighbor saw before backing away.

“He had been severely injured. It appears he had self-amputated his left arm from below the elbow,” Sgt. Trent Crump told the Daily News.

Police officers found the suspect in front of the home and the decapitated body of 49-year-old Trina Heisch inside a walk-in closet. The bodies of two dogs, each decapitated, were found inside as well in the 5100 block of North 13th Place.

The couple met while undergoing mental health treatment and then married, relatives told investigators.

The victim and suspect, who has not been identified by authorities, have a history of mental illness.

Heisch had a recent encounter with law enforcement in March when she allegedly tried to stab her husband. She was then arrested on a domestic violence charge.

On Saturday, the suspect claimed to have killed three members of his family, but investigators are still determining if he was referring to additional people or the dogs, Crump explained.

There were no additional victims inside the home.

The witness told investigators the suspect had a history of mental health problems and had recently been released from a mental health facility.

He checked on the suspect after not hearing from him in at least 24 hours.

As of Saturday evening, the suspect is in surgery for his injuries and will not be identified by authorities until he's booked into jail.

There have been 911 calls to the same address in the past, Crump noted.

"These two have a history of a domestic-violence relationship," Crump told the Arizona Republic.

Some of those calls were apparently made by neighbors who complained about alleged drug activity and the amount of people who stop by the residence.

“When the sun goes down, traffic picks up,” Carolyn Brice told The News.
