DEKALB COUNTY, Ga.
For 16 years, Sharon Sanders has lived at the foot of what she believes is one of Pine Lakes most infamous streets.
"I thought I would take some white tape and just tape over one of the R's, Sanders said. Forrest Road, with two Rs.
Some residents believe it might be named after Confederate Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest.
"Whether we know or not that it was named after General Forrest, Forrest with two R's, was a major Ku Klux Klan leader. I don't think there should be any doubt about honoring him. I think we should not, Sanders said.
And so, there is a petition to drop an R.
"I believe it to be sort of a coded message about welcoming black people and other people of color in our city. So personally, I would change it. But it's not up to me, it's up to the people, Mayor Kathie deNobriga said. Each property owner on Forrest will get a vote. If those who want a change get the most votes, the matter then goes before the DeKalb County Commission. But Sharon Sanders said her plan with a little white tape will work just fine.
"No fuss. Of course, somebody can come and take it down. But it would be fun. That's what we do here in Pine Lake. We play, Sanders said. Channel 2 Action News also talked to residents on the block who say linking Forrest Road to the KKK is ridiculous, and they will vote against removing a letter.
