The Dutch army now have something in common with kids playing army in the playground.

Local media has reported that due to a shortage of live ammunition, soldiers in the Netherlands have been forced to imitate the sounds of their rifles by shouting things like: ‘Bang! Bang!’.

Dutch broadcaster RTL claims to have gotten hold of a confidential email which outlines the army’s shortage of bullets.

Retired Major-General Harm de Jonge told RTL the problem is actually not as funny as it sounds.

He said not training with bullet can lead to soldiers losing confidence, which was called ‘extremely serious’, and ‘disastrous for morale’.

The Dutch Defence Ministry has pledged to replenish stocks this year, however they admitted that the shortage has left troops feeling frustrated.

The government has reportedly raised the defence budget this fiscal year from €7.6billion (£5.3billion) to €8billion (£5.6billion).

Maybe in the mean time they could get some cap guns in? Just a thought.
