Huntington Park, California, City Councilman Jhonny Pineda recently appointed two men who are living in the U.S. illegally to city commission positions (video below).
The announcement on Aug. 2 caused controversy as one unidentified citizen yelled, “You are out of order!” at the city council.
Frank Medina and Julian Zatarain will be leading the health and education commission, and the parks and recreation commission, respectively, notes KABC.
Neither man qualifies for President Barack Obama's Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Act, but both reportedly worked on Pineda's campaign.
Pineda told CBS Los Angeles: “We need to make sure that we bring everyone together to the table here in Huntington Park so that we can make sure we’re sharing the same vision.”
An unidentified resident countered, “We’re sending the wrong message: 'You can be illegal and you can come and work for a city.'"
Pineda claimed that Medina and Zatarain would not be on the city payroll and won't be determining city policy.
Pineda said both men have a history of volunteering for the city, but didn't mention any work they reportedly did for his campaign.
Huntington Park City Mayor Karina Macias supported the appointments of the men, but they will have to pass background checks and undergo processing by the city council.
