A Norwegian court has sentenced a Latvian airBaltic co-pilot to six months in jail after he failed a breathalyser test before take-off from Oslo’s airport.

The 38-year-old man – who registered an alcohol level that was almost seven times the legal limit – admitted that he drank two bottles of whisky and some beer with the other crew members before the flight’s planned departure for Greece with around 100 passengers aboard on 8 August.

In his verdict the judge highlighted the co-pilot’s high level of intoxication, the number of people whose lives would have been endangered if he had flown the plane, the length of the flight and the fact that he must have known that his colleagues had also been drinking.

Meanwhile the 50-year-old Latvian pilot, whose alcohol level was more than double the legal limit, has rejected some of the charges against him.

He is being held in custody and will go before a court on 17 September.

Two Latvian flight attendants also tested positive for alcohol.

Norwegian police tested the crew shortly before take-off after receiving a tipoff from an anonymous caller.

The airline said it had begun dismissal procedures against the crew.

I didn't know you could be 7 times over the limit and still be alive!!

Norway's limit is .02 as opposed to USA which is .08. So just .08 would be 4x over and really you could blow that after one shot

I saw a special years ago where they busted a whole bunch of pilots...mostly European flights, Greece was prominent for some reason..

anyways, a few pilots were way over the alcohol limit when flying long flights and most of them tested positive for coke and other drugs too

I think out here you arent even supposed to drink the day before a flight.

I know 3 commercial pilots, 2 fly for BA and one for Thai Air. 1 is basically teetotal, the odd glass of wine or beer once or twice a week but the other two are complete and utter piss-heads who think nothing of drinking a bottle of spirits at one sitting. My liver aches when I know they're going to be around!

these pilots in the special I saw were impaired both on booze and drugs....no incidents, which made the investigators wonder how some of them could fly when they could barely walk

I understand from my mates that air traffic controllers are just as bad, which is just as worrying!
