Former child star Amanda Bynes resurfaced Monday after months out of the limelight and was photographed wearing a bikini taking selfies in a pool. Bynes’ lawyer Tamar Arminak tells FOX411 "she is doing extremely well and everyone is so proud of her."

Bynes last public appearance was on July 23 at the launch of fashion designer Michael Costello’s pre-fall capsule collection in Los Angeles. She was all smiles at the event and appeared to be in good spirits.

Last year, Bynes made headlines for her public meltdown chronicled by a series of wildly inappropriate Twitter rants. Throughout her meltdown, Bynes' Twitter was often active at all-hours as she sent out erratic message, sometimes every few minutes. But now she hasn’t tweeted in almost five months, which some experts say could be a sign she is on the straight and narrow.

Pop culture expert Cate Meighan noted that Bynes seems to do best when steers clear of the glare of the Hollywood spotlights.

“It seems like when she is off of her meds… that's when Amanda needs media attention and offers up those crazy sound bites. When she is OK and balanced Amanda seems OK with stepping away from the spotlight and doing other things. She had enrolled in school and picked up some classes last year when she had stabilized so the pattern seems to be that if she's out of sight then she's holding her own,” Meighan told us.

Bynes seems to be in a much better place these days after a difficult few years of concerning behavior and run-ins with the law. Bynes has previously stated—via her Twitter account—that she suffered from bipolar disorder and she is manic depressive.

Dr. Damon Raskin, a Los Angeles-based addiction specialist, said the trappings of fame and fortune aren’t necessarily the cause of mental illness, but they can be a catalyst.

“I have seen firsthand how the pressure of fame and stardom can trigger vulnerable kids to develop both bad behavior and mental illness,” said Raskin, who does not treat Bynes. “It is the stress for those with poor coping skills that can then lead to acting out. For those with the right genetics, this can trigger illnesses such as depression and schizophrenia.”

Bynes’s troubles appear to have begun around four years ago when she “quit” acting and posed for Maxim in an attempt to shed her wholesome, tween idol image. She rose to international stardom at the age of 10, soon garnering her own primetime Nickelodeon program “The Amanda Show.” Bynes later transitioned into movies, making her mark in hits like “Hairspray” and “She’s the Man.”

She appeared to stay out of the Hollywood party scene, and told FOX411 in 2008 that she preferred “quiet time.”
