View Full Version : Remember when....

A lot of us here are right around the same age, give or take a few years, so I was just thinking about things that don't exist in our lives anymore but you almost couldn't go without back when we were younger. Post some things that the younger folk today just wouldn't understand.

Like for example...remember when you couldn't tell what was going to be on TV unless you got the latest issue of the TV Guide every week?

I remember having to go to a store to buy things and having to live without if any of the stores around you didn't have what you were looking for.

I remember being primarily aware of what was going on in your neighborhood and region, maybe even in your state to a point, but being completely ignorant of what was going on in the rest of the country or in the world unless something really really big happened.

We used to load up a box full of cassettes for a road trip. And, I remember when a cassette, after being used on a road trip in a hot car would stop working or sound weird. You pressed eject, hit it against the dash a few times, put it back in, and it was good to go.

I still remember when the days before cable TV and we got less than 10 channels on TV (growing up in rural Vermont, we got ABC, NBC, CBS, two PBS channels, two English language channels from Canada, and a couple of French language channels from Canada), divided up between VHF and UHF, and you actually had to get up and go to the TV to change the channel.

We finally ended up getting cable when I was in Jr High I think.

We had three channels...one was CBC (very dry Canadian programming) and one was the French channel. So we really had one choice. That channel was a workhorse. Everything from shows like Star Trek to game shows to movie of the week programs.

I remember saying all sorts of nasty things to my Dad about black and white TV, no cable etc....found out later in life that he was supporting four other people, buying a house, buying a car...all on a wage that would be laughable to 12 year old children today. I hated myself for complaining about 'what we didn't have.'

We played hide and go seek, not sure if it's similar to jailbreak.

One of the funniest games I've heard of recently is - Get Down Mr President! That would be similar to some of our home made games. We were rough kids and often did things that hurt.

My room mates and I literally had people knocking on our door, asking if they could come in and watch TV. Most workers there were transient and had no more than the clothes on their backs.

Remote was similar to this, with three buttons that clicked very loudly...and often broke.

Wasn't it down to more porn available on vhs ?

No, it was because Sony put their weight behind the Betamax and tried to keep it all proprietary and JVC (which developed VHS) licensed the technology to anyone that wanted it, so that drove prices down. Not to mention the fact that the VHS tapes had a longer recording time than the Beta tapes. By the time Sony changed all that, it was too late and VHS had won.

Noilly Pratt
09-01-2015, 03:55 PM
When I was a kid we lived in rural Ontario. We had to go through a local operator to call anyone.

Later when I was about 6, it was upgraded to a thing called a "party line" where you share the phone line with a few others and you'd have a specific ring if it was for you. These things were still around for a long while. I remember a friend's dad was one of the last guys who went off his party line in about 1985. He hated it because it was going to cost him more.

It was mis-named. There was no party -- when you picked up the telephone it was usually just an old woman gossiping to another old woman, and I remember my dad yelling at least once a week "quit your gossiping, woman! I need to phone someone!" :)

remember looking forward to the 1st day of the school holidays

The last day of the school year, and the whole summer ahead!

The first summer day out of school that you and your friends jump in the pool.

Pretty sure kids today all remember that too :-k

While I agree with you, as an adult though nothing compares to that feeling you had as a child.

:-k

Having to find a dictionary or an adult to help you spell a word...not using an online white search box with red squiggly lines to help.

But, gansta rap was the heyday

I dont like the shit my kids listens too, I still listen to 80/90s rap on the old school channel, I rarely turn on the "new" rap/hip hop channels

The term Five and Dime goes way back into the old days, like the old west I believe when they sold most things for 5 cents or 10 cents. Basically a general store type thing where you could get whatever you needed. I could be a little off on the definition or time line, but that's what I was always told about the Five and Dime.

Ah, so maybe something like the Pound shops we have nowadays, loads of different things all at cheap prices! Finally came to me what song i'd heard it in, Bryan Adams - Summer of 69! "Bought it at the five and dime"

I remember when Philippe Petit walked a tight rope between the World Trade Center towers in 1974.

The towers were still under construction in some places, I was nine years old listening on the radio and then later saw the pictures in the newspaper.

It's an incredible story...they had to sneak in, wait for hours, then he ended up crossing the span multiple times. Breathtaking in scope and audacity...
