Nancy Ann Krapfl was 66 years old when she died after apparently being raped beaten to death because she was in the “wrong place at the wrong time.”
Her alleged assailant is 19-year-old Helmon Betwell of Dubuque, Iowa, who told police he attacked Krapful because “was nothing better to do,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by KWWL.
During the early morning hours of Sept. 1, an unidentified man called police after seeing what he believed was a man on top of a woman, beating her. He came out of his apartment and the man pulled his pants up and took off running. Krapf was unresponsive and was taken to Finley Hospital in Dubuque, where she later died.
Thanks to traffic camera footage which captured part of the incident, officers were able to identify Betwell, who lives in the area. Police tracked him down at his home and saw what they believed was blood on the soles of his shoes and injuries on his hands. Authorities then executed a search warrant and flood blood stains throughout the house, KWQC reported.
Betwell was taken into custody, where he admitted to breaking into two vehicles before he saw Krapfl and knocked her unconscious. After he raped her, Betwell said he went home but that he returned after she noticed she tried to crawl into some grass.
Betwell reportedly said he didn’t know Krapfl, but that he wanted to get into more trouble.
