A hoarder in China collected so much rubbish it spilled outside and prevented entry to a block of flats.
The pensioner Xu, 83, reportedly had a habit of picking up discarded items he found on the street and bringing them home.
The 20-ton pile of trash soon grew out of his home into the entrance of the flats he occupies in Qingdao, in East China’s Shandong Province, residents have had to use the emergency exit.
According to reports in the Urban Peninsula newspaper, the elderly man's children thought he planned to recycle the rubbish - but they soon realised there was a problem when the trash kept on rising.
Despite complaints from neighbours about the mess and smell, the pensioner continued to store the items and became protective of his rubbish collection.
A neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous, said: 'The old man is not in the best mental state. His family are very worried about him. We have been neighbours for a long time and understand that. When he is in a better condition, we try to tell him not to keep collecting but the next day he would back to his old habit.'
Residents said this behaviour had been going on over a ten-year period.
This week - with the rubbish almost two-stories high - the pensioner's children packed him off on a long weekend away and then called in a cleaning crew of 20 to clean up the waste.
It took two days to remove the rubbish from the site.
It is understood the elderly man suffers from compulsive hoarding disorder, which prevents him from throwing things away.
