A 17-year-old girl from Delhi, India, who was lured to a hotel with the promise of work, has allegedly been raped by up to 27 men.
The teenager was taken to the popular tourist destination of Jaipur by neighbors on Aug. 29, after the girl had asked them for help finding work.
“The couple said she could earn good money at Indraprastha Hotel and left with her for Jaipur the same day,” a police officer said, Hindustan Times reported. "On reaching the hotel (on August 30), she was reportedly confined to a room and raped by 11 men. She said the first two men entered the room together and took turns to rape her. After a few minutes, another group walked in and raped her. This went on for over 24 hours."
The girl was confined to a hotel room and denied food. After escaping the following day, she traveled back to Delhi where she filed a formal police complaint.
“She managed to escape last week and file a complaint in Delhi,” a police officer said, according to Daily Mail. "Based on her complaint we have arrested six men and we are studying the CCTV footage from the hotel to nab the rest of the suspects.”
It is believed the girl was searching for work due to debts built up by her father, who was reportedly an alcoholic, according to Hindustan Times.
The alleged incident adds to a series of rape cases in India recently, including the fatal gang rape of a student in Delhi in 2012, which provoked an international outcry.
Only last week, a court convicted three men in Jaipur for raping a Japanese student who was sightseeing in the city.
The three men involved in the incident in February were each handed 20-year prison sentences.
The men were sentenced under new fast track proceedings for rape trials, which were introduced in 2013 in the wake of the 2012 Delhi gang rape.
