The new Miss Italia is being ridiculed for the second time in a week after she said her favourite historical Italian figure is American basketball legend Michael Jordan.

Alice Sabatini, crowned Miss Italia on Sunday, paid dearly on social media after she was asked what historical period she would like to live in and answered: "1942"- one of the darkest years of the Second World War and the Mussolini dictatorship.

The gaffe won her a "Tapiro d'Oro" (Golden Tapir), a mock prize given out by Italian satirical news program Striscia la Notizia to celebrities who have been humiliated or defeated.

When Miss Sabatini was handed the mock prize by Valerio Staffelli, Striscia's special correspondent, she was asked which Italian historical figure she most admired.

After a long pause the beauty queen replied: "Michael Jordan, the greatest player in basketball history".

Miss Sabatini, who plays basketball in A2 (second division) in Italy, has a tattoo of the former NBA player's logo on her hip.

The 18-year-old attempted to defend her 1942 statement, saying that her 91-year-old great-grandmother lived through the war and is one of the strongest people in her life.

But she later admitted the answer was a gaffe.

Many Italian personalities desperately try to avoid receiving the award from Mr Staffelli, who once had his nose broken by Fabrizio Del Noce when he cornered the TV director.
