A police officer’s decision to help out a North Carolina woman who didn’t have enough money to buy gas has generated a positive response online.

Officer Thomas Bautista saw Kat Hartman paying $6 in change to fill up her car on Sept. 21. Earlier, she had reportedly sold a 2-year-old stroller to get the money for the gas.

“I needed some gas for myself to get to work for the rest of the week,” Hartman told WCNC.

But before she drove away, Bautista approached her vehicle.

“I though [sic] I was in trouble. 'Oh, what else could go wrong?' But, then it turned out to be a blessing,” she said.

“I saw you were paying in change and only put a small amount in your car,” Bautista said, according to Hartman, who spoke to the Charlotte Observer.

“I told myself I was going to do something good for someone else today, so I’m going to fill up your tank," Bautista reportedly added.

“I immediately started [bawling] my eyes out,” Hartman wrote on Facebook. “Not all cops are bad! This was amazing. I can’t thank him enough.”

Hartman said that just before Bautista offered to help, she had been forced to tell her son that he could not have chocolate milk from the store.

“I had to tell him ‘no’ because I didn’t have enough money,” Hartman added.

Hartman’s post on Facebook explaining what Bautista had done got over 21,000 likes by Sept. 23.

“He’s just one of those guys who goes out of his way to help people,” Scott Sharp, Huntersville Police Captain, told the Charlotte Observer.

“It’s just nice to see one of our officers being recognized for something they do when no one’s really watching them,” Sharp added.

“He's inspired a lot of people,” Hartman added to WCNC.
