Jeremy Corbyn’s new ‘militant’ vegan shadow minister for farming thinks meat should be handled just like tobacco in terms of public health.

Kerry McCarthy suggested meat-eaters needed to be helped in the same way as smokers while talking to vegan magazine Viva!life.

‘I really believe that meat should be treated in exactly the same way as tobacco, with public campaigns to stop people eating it,’ the MP for Bristol East said.

‘Progress on animal welfare is being made at EU level… but in the end it comes down to not eating meat or dairy.

‘The constant challenging of the environmental impact of livestock farming is making me more and more militant.’

But the suggestion hasn’t gone down too well with the people she’s meant to be working with.

‘Kerry McCarthy’s views on meat eating and livestock farming are completely out of step with the vast majority of people,’ Countryside Alliance member Tim Bonner told the Telegraph.

‘Her ideas are verging on the cranky. This appointment is only going to make it more difficult for Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour Party to reconnect with rural Britain.’

Ms McCarthy has since spoken about the interview with Farming Today, on BBC Radio 4.

‘I have my own personal views on what I choose to eat, but I accept that we have a livestock industry in this country,’ she said.

Dear Lord, great endorsement for the judgement of the new opposition leader when he appoints a complete whack-job like this!
