Rockmart High School in Polk County, Georgia, went into lockdown drill on Sept. 23 after a 10th grade student brought a Confederate flag on campus, which triggered a series of events.

The teen, who is white, walked through a cafeteria and courtyard with the flag attached to his backpack when he was confronted by two black students.

"They wanted to confront him about what he had on his book bag ... They was, 'Hey man why you doing that,'" Principal Wesley Cupp told Fox 5 Atlanta.

There was some physical contact and a verbal exchange, but Cupp says that members of the school staff soon broke up the situation.

After rumors of more students with Confederate flags, the school went into lockdown, notes The Root.

"We just did that as a precautionary situation to help maintain and control what could have been a bad situation," Cupp told Fox 5 Atlanta.

All three students were suspended for disruption, not free speech issues, according to Cupp.

"When you become a distraction where students can't learn because of a distraction then that needs to be removed," said Cupp.
