A man who has camped on a verge of the A9 near Blair Atholl for three years was evicted today for causing a “safety hazard and distraction for drivers”.

Charles Ingram, who is believed to be 70, is reported to have set up home in his Mercedes 220 car after losing his money in a business dispute.

He become a familiar sight to motorists on the Perth-Inverness road, but roads officials said they had been forced to take action because his camp had grown and become more of a distraction.

The A9 was closed the camp was moved.

The Scottish Government’s Transport Scotland agency, which runs the road, said it had had no choice but to act.

A spokeswoman said: “Decisions like this are never taken lightly but reflect our responsibility for the safe operation of the trunk road network and our concern for Mr Ingram’s personal welfare.

“The extent of the encampment on the A9 has grown in recent months and it is now a safety hazard and distraction for drivers and, as such, we have no choice but to take this action.

“We have been working closely with Perth and Kinross Council, as the local authority responsible for care and welfare issues, along with Police Scotland, to ensure everything possible has been done to resolve this situation amicably.

“All partners remain on hand to provide any support we can to Mr Ingram to ensure that his welfare and possessions are protected.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Officers were in attendance at a Transport Scotland operation today on the A9 near Blair Atholl.

“Officers were present to provide support, ensuring public safety due to the closure of the road.”

Mr Ingram, from Blair Atholl, is reported to have been a garage owner but lost his business.

He is said to have chosen the location for his camp because it was close to the village where he lived with his late mother.

A spokeswoman for Perth & Kinross Council said: “We can confirm we have worked with Transport Scotland to offer advice on our welfare and support role.

“We will do whatever we can to assist people who become homeless. This includes offering emergency and temporary accommodation and providing support, advice and assistance to secure the most suitable housing option available.”
