After a near-fatal car accident, doctors performed what has been called a "miracle surgery" and reattached an Australian toddler's head to his body.

According to The Sun, 16-month-old Jackson Taylor was in the car with his mother and 9-year-old sister when they crashed into another vehicle at about 70 mph. The force of the crash caused Taylor to have an internal decapitation, in which the head is pulled apart from the rest of the body.

Taylor was airlifted to a hospital in Brisbane, where doctors performed a six-hour operation to try to save his life.

Dr. Geoff Askin, who has been called Australia's "godfather of spinal surgery," led the operation. Using a tiny piece of wire and a piece of Taylor's rib, Askin and his team reattached the vertebrae successfully.

Taylor is making a recovery. He will be wearing a halo to keep everything together for the next eight weeks and will be expected to lead a healthy life after that.

"A lot of children wouldn't survive that injury in the first place, and if they did and they were resuscitated then they may never move or breathe again," Askin said.

"It was a miracle," Taylor's mother said.
