Young people who apparently stole a “rug” to sit on in Crediton have been warned to seek medical advice.

A group of youngsters were spotted in a wooded area behind the Lords Meadow Sewage Centre in Crediton earlier this week.

A witness claimed to have seen them stealing a sheet of material from a skip near the premises.

But an anonymous onlooker has warned them the “rug” was actually a piece of equipment to extract water from human excrement.

Posting to Facebook, the person wrote: “What you didn’t know what the “rug” was actually a belt for extracting water from human poo.

“This belt has had six months of poo squeezed through it and you have been sitting on it. Just goes to show stealing doesn’t pay.”

The poster advised the youths to seek medical advice should they feel unwell.

A spokesman for Health and Safety Executive said: “Exposure to sewage may result in harmful illnesses such as: gastroenteritis, characterised by cramping stomach pains, diarrhoea and vomiting or Weil’s disease, a flu-like illness with persistent and severe headache.”
