The sporting world has been rocked by allegations of another doping scandal… this time at the World Puddle Jumping Championships in Northamptonshire.

Organisers of the contest, due to be held on Wednesday, issued a warning that people taking part should not consume ‘fizzy pop or energy drinks’ before taking part because it could give them an unfair advantage.

That’s right, it seems not even children are immune from the temptation to boost their physical prowess using artificial substances – and they are turning to cans of Tango and Dr Pepper to get the edge over competitors.

The annual contest at Wicksteed Park attracts entrants from across the country, and has been won by competitors aged nine and seven in the last two years, the Northampton Chronicle reported.

But although there is no suggestion previous winners took the title using unfair means, organisers banned fizzy drinks because the sugar and additives in them could make children hyperactive, allowing them to jump higher and make bigger splashes.

Children will be marked on enthusiasm, height of jump and the amount of mud which clings to them – but the majority of marks will come from the splash itself as they navigate a series of championship-standard puddles.

Wicksteed Park’s managing director Alasdair McNee told the Chronicle: ‘We understand that some children see these items as treats so maybe parents can allow their children to consume them after they have enjoyed the fresh air and exercise of taking part.’

This is not the first time sporting contests have been marred by doping associations.

Lance Armstrong was stripped of seven Tour de France titles after he admitted regular doping, while Ben Johnson lost his 1988 Olympic gold medal after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

Let’s just hope this Puddle Jumping scandal has been caught early enough to preserve the dignity of the sport.
