A pop-up shop is to open today selling tongue-in-cheek delicacy the crisp sandwich.

Simply Crispy is to offer soup and a sandwich, with any number of spud varieties, in a culinary experiment that started out as an online parody.

Satirical website Ulster Fry did a joke news item on a trendy eatery opening up to serve the snack which is regarded as one of Northern Ireland’s less-challenging nutritional staples.

But the people behind That Wee Cafe in Belfast city centre, well known for their Twitter account as well as their food, offered to turn it into a reality after the story generated huge interest from people after a taste of nostalgia.

Owner Andrew McMenamin offered to transform his business when he read the spoof online.

He said: “Hopefully it will rekindle a few childhood memories.

“It is a bit of fun, it is not to be taken too seriously.”

Customers will be able to choose their bread and crisps and add cheese or ham to their sandwich, which will be served with soup and chips.

Tayto will provide most of the crisps “due to its large variety” but Walkers will also be represented.

Among the bread on offer will be the traditional white Belfast bap. Mr McMenamin added: “We are riding on the back of the publicity the cereal cafe got in London. If it helps us and Ulster Fry then it is a good thing.”

The Cereal Killer Cafe opened in Brick Lane last year.

It was established by Belfast twins Alan and Gary Keery.

Mr McMenamin would not be drawn on the long-term prospects for his own novel venture.

He added: “It is certainly play it by ear, hopefully it will rekindle childhood memories of Belfast baps.”

The idea has been credited to comedy writer Seamus O’Shea and his writing partner Billy McWilliams, who run the Ulster Fry website.

Their original parody contained a rave preview from restaurant critic for Belfast style magazine Le Ganch Hugo Hamilton who praised its “homespun decor of old school desks and bean bag chairs, and the food is presented so delightfully on reclaimed scaffolding boards”.

On the Ulster Fry site over the weekend they said of their spoof: “Not only did people believe it, but people wanted to believe it.”

“We’ll need your help to make it a success, so get sharing, get tweeting (#simplycrispy) and, more importantly, get down there and get eating.”

I was on this closed Facebook forum over the summer. It was for a TV show...I started posting in multiple threads, tons of posts and didn't understand there was some sort of silly protocol about doing that...that no one ever explained to me.

So some asshat writes an 18 paragraph post about how I did this horrible thing...he insults me pretty good. I think he's just another guy so I let him have it with both barrels. Other posters are saying things like wow and holy shit, did you see that? ...so I think I've pwned the guy and he'll shut up.

Turns out he created the forum and was the main admin. It's a invitation only sort of thing and he was the guy who actually ok'ed my request to get in :rofl:


So I didn't post again, quit the group/forum and never returned :lol:

it was a Survivor forum and they had a birthday thread for one of the contestants...I had just watched her season so I fangirled the thread pretty hard thinking she wouldn't show up and comment. According to the admin, I probably scared her away, she'll never post again and 'they are people just like you and me, not celebrities'. I understand that better than him and none of my posts were creepy or overtly sexual....more like funny sfw pictures and some cutesy stuff with animals because the girl worked at a zoo and loved animals.

So she shows up (with her twin sister) and they hit 'like' on no fewer than 20 of my posts :lol: :lol:
