CASPER, Wyo. — A crack in the ground on the southern end of the Big Horn Mountains is drawing attention on social media, but officials say it’s not a unique occurrence.

The new formation, which is about 50 yards long and 50 yards wide, was likely caused by a recent landslide, said Wyoming Geological Survey Manager of Groundwater and Geologic Hazards and Mapping Seth Wittke.

Officials have mapped over 40,000 landslides in the state, Wittke said.

The gash garnered attention on social media after SNS Outfitter & Guides shared an image of the crevasse on its Facebook page.

Wittke said geological officials have not visited the site of the crack but have seen photos. He said the gash is on private property so he’s unsure if a site visit to investigate further is possible.

“It’s a really unique thing to see or talk about, but it’s not necessarily a priority because it’s not a danger to anyone or anything,” Wittke said.

He said landslides can be reported at www.wsgs.wyo.gov so the Geological Survey can determine what caused the slide.
