A pedestrian has been injured after a two-seater sofa fell on him from the penthouse of a five-star London hotel.

The man – thought to be in his 20s – suffered a serious injury which witnessed said ‘looked like his face had been ripped off’.

The sofa is said to have fallen from one of the privately-rented properties in the penthouse of the W Residences in London’s West End.

‘The sofa came flying over the top of the hotel’s flat roof. I can’t understand how something that big and heavy came to fall over the edge.

He told the Sun that the ‘smartly-dressed’ pedestrian ‘looked like his face had been ripped off.’

Emergency services confirmed they attended the scene.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: ‘Police were called at 08.54hrs on Friday 30 October to reports of a pedestrian injured in Wardour Street W1.

‘At this early stage it is believed he was injured by a piece of furniture which fell from scaffolding.

‘The man aged in his 20s taken to an east London hospital by London’s Air Ambulance. His condition is critical but stable.’

While the London Ambulance Service added: ‘We were called at 8.52am to Wardour Street after reports of a person being hit by a falling object.

‘We treated a man at the scene for a major head injury and took him as a priority to a major trauma centre to a hospital in central London.’
