A Southbridge middle-high school was locked down for more than an hour Wednesday after two girls mistook a student holding a stapler for a gunman, police said.

The Telegram & Gazette reported that the girls told a school resource officer at Southbridge Middle-High School that they saw a student waving a gun at about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Chief Shane Woodson said not only were the girls incorrect about the object, but they also misidentified the student in question. Yet despite the error, a stay-in-place order was issued by Southbridge's principal as police investigated.

After determining that there was no immediate threat, police found the right student and learned that he had been holding a stapler.

Woodson said any youngster can mistake what a gun looks like. "Things happen so fast," he said.
