A man is accused of breaking into a family home and raping a six-year-old girl.

Police arrested 28-year-old Oscar Rivera Herrera at the scene of the break-in after the child's 11-year-old brother alerted his parents to his presence in the home.

The child's stepfather held the suspect at knifepoint in the family's suburban Philadelphia home while they waited for police to arrive.

Cops arrived at 4am on Monday, with a report penned by cops claiming that Herrera had told the stepfather repeatedly: "Kill me. Kill me. Or let me go."

Herrera has been charged with rape, rape of a child, statutory sexual assault, sexual assault, indecent assault, burglary, criminal trespass, terroristic threats and assault.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said: "I have to give great credit to this 11-year-old boy who had the courage to step up and help his sister and great courage to the family for the restraint that they exercised."

Police officers said that Herrera denied raping the child, however he did admit breaking into the home.

They claim he also told them that he broke into the same home weeks earlier, but no one was there.

Herrera, of no fixed abode, is now in police custody with a bail set at $1,000,000.

Speaking to NBC10, Crystal Dutter, a local who claimed that Herrera went to high school with her boyfriend, said: "He's a really great father.

"That's what blows my mind. He has a kid of his own that same age. How could he do something like that?"

Herrera will appear for a preliminary hearing on November 19.
