LONDON (AP) — Britain's police watchdog says a seven-year-old girl visiting a police headquarters after winning a coloring competition was injured when an officer's gun accidentally went off.

The child was hit in the lip by a bullet casing. The Independent Police Complaints Commission said it was only "through good fortune that no one was more seriously injured" in the Oct. 30, 2014, incident at Nottinghamshire Police headquarters in central England.

Most British police do not carry guns, but every force has specially trained officers authorized to use firearms.

The watchdog said in a report Wednesday that officers armed with live weapons should no longer take part in public events because of the safety risk. It said the officer involved had been redeployed to a role "with no firearm or Taser duties."
