A Sacramento, California, mother was convicted of killing her infant daughter in 2011 by placing her in a microwave oven.
According to the Sacramento Bee, 34-year-old Ka Yang was convicted of first-degree murder and assault on a child causing great bodily injury leading to death.
Yang, a mother of four, was reportedly alone with her 2-month-old daughter Mirabelle Thao-Lo for just 11 minutes, when the infant was placed in the microwave oven for as long as five minutes.
According to CBS Sacramento and Sacramento Bee, the child suffered burns to 60-80 percent of her body, including her internal organs.
The argument made by Yang’s attorney, that the mother committed the murder while in the middle of a seizure, was rejected by jurors, despite Yang’s family defending her story, reported Sacramento Bee.
“She didn’t know what she was doing,” family spokesperson Lao Paochoua Thao said following the guilty verdict, according to Sacramento Bee. Thao described Yang as a “gentle, nice woman” who wouldn’t have hurt her child intentionally.
“There is no history of child abuse,” defense attorney Linda Parisi added. "She has no criminal history."
Prosecutors argued during the trial that Yang did not have a seizure the day of the murder, and lied to investigators several times about the cause of death before detectives discovered a pacifier in the microwave, reported Sacramento Bee.
Yang, whose three surviving sons were placed in the custody of family members, faces 26 years to life in prison. Sentencing will take place on Dec. 18.
