The dash cam video showing a Chicago police officer allegedly shooting a teenager to death has been made public for the first time.

Video of the fatal Oct. 20, 2014 shooting of Laquan McDonald, who later died at a hospital, was shown this evening a day ahead of the court-ordered deadline and as reported by ABC-owned station WLS-TV.

The video, obtained by WLS, shows the 17-year-old walking down the middle of a Chicago street as he is confronted by several police officers at a distance.

The video was taken from the dash camera of a responding police car. The WLS version of the video contains faint audio, but the Chicago Police Superintendent, Garry McCarthy, said the footage police were releasing contained no sound.

"These clouds of smoke were later identified as clouds of debris caused by fired bullets," according to court documents filed by the State's Attorney's office earlier today.

Jason Van Dyke, the police officer who allegedly shot McDonald a total of 16 times in 14 to 15 seconds, was arrested today and charged with first-degree murder.

McDonald's family issued a statement earlier today reiterating that they "would prefer" that it not be made public and urging "calm" when and if it was made public.

McCarthy said Van Dyke was stripped of his police powers immediately and was no longer being paid by the department.

"Every day in this city, you see thousands of officers performing admirably and making a difference of the lives of the people of Chicago," McCarthy said.

"We are not the least bit pleased about this."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel echoed McCarthy's sentiments: "This moment does not speak to who we are and what we can become."

==========================================

The protests have started, currently at about 600.

Black Lives Matter has called for members to converge on Chicago.

By the way... in the 15 months since this murder by the cop, 293 black Chicagoans have been killed by other blacks. BLM didn't say a word about that.

So in your opinion, the former officer wasn't justified?

I don't know any of the details of this case, btw. In fact, today is the first I've heard of it at all.

No, not justified at all. 5 other officers present I believe, only one fired on the suspect. That officer fired 16 shots into the kid, 9 after he was disabled on the ground. It sure looks and sounds like an execution.

So yes, charge him with murder. But again, no protests for the 293 black on black murders. It's sheer hypocrisy.

If you shoot somebody and they fall to the ground, then unless the person laying on the ground is holding a loaded gun trying to aim at you, there's no reason to shoot twice. If your fellow officers in the situation see no reason to draw their weapons, then you probably don't need to draw yours. I'm gonna side with you on the matter.

I assumed they just drove around with a modified street sweeper every morning to collect the bodies. Chalk outlines imply they are gonna investigate the shooting.

Closest I came was at a strip club in Florida for my bachelor party in '96, but the gun got pointed at my brother in law.

Yes, up here in no-gun land while I was at a place buying weed. Didn't know a soul and in barges a guy who thinks he's Huggy Bear....all dressed up and waving a gun around.
I said quietly - I think I'll be going now and he vaguely pointed it at me and told me to sit down.

It pissed me off more than anything. I wanted to hit him just for being a show off douchebag. Apparently it was over some minor money beef with the guy I was buying weed from.

if he's not holding a weapon and there's six officers on the scene, there's no need to shoot him at all and make him fall to the ground...at worst one round in the lower extremities or they dive tackle him..
