Hoover police today cancelled an alert for a suspicious man trying to lure two young boys into his car in the Scout Creek subdivision.

Police issued the warning Friday after two boys, ages 10 and 12, told officers they were riding their bikes when a man inside a parked black Audi told them to get into his car about 9:20 a.m. on Scout Ridge Drive. The boys fled and the man drove off.

Capt. Gregg Rector said detectives located the man and the black Audi. They interviewed him at length and do not believe there was any criminal act or malicious intentions on his part. It appears, Rector said, the man was motioning the boys to cross the street.

In June, police issued a similar alert in the same neighborhood after two boys said a man, possibly with a gun, motioned them to his car. The boys told police they were walking home when they noticed a silver car parked in a nearby cul-de-sac.

As the boys reached their driveway, the silver car pulled up near them and stopped. He motioned with his hand for the boys to come over. One of them saw what he believed to be a handgun in the man's other hand. They ran into the house and the suspect drove away.

Rector said the two boys from Friday's report were not the same two boys, but were aware of the previous incidents. The Friday incident was simply a misunderstanding, he said.

Police have not identified the suspect in the June incident.
