BRADENTON, Fla. -- An alleged attempted robbery in Bradenton late Tuesday night ended with a suspect in police custody after he was shot in the leg with his own gun.

Per a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office, 35-year-old convicted felon Muhammad Solomon was spotted by the husband of the homeowner attempting to gain access to a structure located on 2nd Street E. in Bradenton.

The residence, which is undergoing renovations, had been burglarized the night before, and the husband was staying there with a friend just in case someone else decided to break in.

Shortly before midnight on Dec. 1, the husband spotted Solomon attempting to gain access to the home by climbing an outdoor staircase that led to a covered porch. The husband concealed himself behind a tarp on the landing, and could see that Solomon was carrying a gun as he approached. Thinking quickly, the husband used the element of surprise, jumping out and physically attacking Solomon, knocking the gun from his hand in the process.

As the two men scuffled, Solomon appeared to "reach behind his back," presumable for a second gun, at which point the husband grabbed Solomon's original gun and shot the would-be burglar in the leg. The husband then put Solomon in a "bear hug" and held him until police could arrive.

A Criminal History check was conducted on Solomon, and it was determined that he had 22 prior felon convictions, with the most recent coming in 2011 for possession of a controlled substance. He was treated for a non-life threatening injury before being taken into police custody.
