How hard is it to do? We're thinking about installing surveillance cameras out in the front of our home and the best systems are all wired systems. Never had to run wires between existing walls....how difficult a project will it be?

It all depends the access you have.. Crawl space, attic, etc..

something like these rods would be a good help if like muddy asked you have access , cavitys etc

also imo a 2 person job , cables love to wrap themselfs around stuff when you're trying to pull them along a void a 2nd pair of hands would save a lot of stress

You're right that wired systems are the best but Frcnjay is correct too wireless systems have improved significantly. I have installed a few wireless alarm systems over the years (not cameras I know but the principle is the same) and the main concern is the distance from the control unit and the thickness/number of walls between. The greater the distance required ups the price though so.....

Oh, if you do have access to cavities/under floorboards etc do not run the camera cable alongside electric cables as you'll get interference on the signal.

Absolutely!!

Yeah, but for HD video, I'd rather go wired...a LOT of the wireless surveillance systems I looked at (that were reasonably priced) didn't have great reviews or had no reviews at all.

I'll try and get some pix tonite of the outside where the cameras would be going...not sure where the DVR unit will go yet.

Also, canvas the neighbours - the houses are probably of a similar vintage and someone may have done this already. It helped me immensely when it came time to run my internet to know someone with the same house and where the network drop was, etc.

:slap: :slap:

I looked at all the wireless systems and guess what? They aren't wireless :nono:

You STILL need to run power to them so that means I still need to run cables to them.

 saves getting 5 signal feeds back to one point

I would still need to run all the power cords to different power sources :slap:

And you could use batteries. :-k

So I can change the batteries every 24 hours? :-s

And none of the ones I looked at were battery operated.

Have you got soffit vents? You could run cables behind the soffits. It all depends where you want the cables to meet and join the base station as to how much channeling into the plaster/ floorboard lifting you will need to do. Surface mounted trunking is an option too if you don't mind it, it can be painted to match colour schemes.

I hear Hals gerbils are good at navigating tight spaces, maybe he will loan them to you.
