Argentina will use the Russian-made boats - which are all named after key strategic locations on the British territory - to patrol in waters surrounding the islands in an effort to defend its maritime borders.

The vessels include ARA 'Islas Malvinas' - the name Argentines use to refer to the archipelago - and ARA 'Puerto Argentino' - the Spanish name for the Falkland's capital Port Stanley.

ARA 'Estrecho de San Carlos' - otherwise known as the Falkland Sound - and ARA 'Bahía Agradable' - or Bluff Cove in English - complete the new arrivals, which will be replacing older units scheduled for decommissioning in the coming years.

It is unclear whether Russia had any input in the names of the vessels but the terms are commonly used by Argentina to state its claim to the islands, which have been designated as British overseas territory for almost 200 years.

The ships will be used to defend Argentina's maritime territory, including waters surrounding the Falkland Islands, MercoPress reports.

But Buenos Aires insists they will also be used for search and rescue operations and to salvage sunken vessels.

The four ships were delivered from Russia after a 40-day transatlantic journey.

Russia's maritime fleet has worked closely with Argentina following a major fire on Argentina's Antarctic flagship icebreaker Almirante Irizar in 2007.

Since then, Argentina has used Russian icebreakers and heavy duty helicopters in support of its Antarctic bases.

The deal for four new Russian vessels was agreed during a recent visit by outgoing president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner to Moscow.

It follows a similar agreement between the two nations in which Argentina secured new Russian-built Sukhoi Su-24 fighter jets.

Express.co.uk revealed last December that Russia was to lease 12 Su-24s to the Argentine Air Force.

The move prompted the UK's Ministry of Defence to launch a review into the protection of the Falkland Islands, with one official describing the deal as exposing a "real window of vulnerability".

China is also involved in supplying the Argentine navy with new warships in a deal signed by Fernandez de Kirchner, who leaves office tomorrow.
