A woman accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of makeup from a Deltona CVS store ended up in a stranger's house where she bathed, changed into some of the homeowner's pajamas and took a nap, officials said.

Eryn Rice ended up in the home of strangers after she broke free from a deputy who had placed a handcuff on one of her wrists before she spun around and shoved the deputy to the ground, Volusia County sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said.

The unusual episode started early Sunday at the CVS on Howland Avenue where Rice was spotted shoplifting cosmetics, Davidson said. Her accomplice was waiting outside. But when the accomplice noticed a deputy arriving at the scene, he took off, leaving Rice inside, he said. When she emerged from the store, she was arrested, Davidson said.

But Rice escaped after the deputy handcuffed her and bolted. The deputy ran after her and a helicopter and K-9 unit were deployed, to no avail.

Rice headed to a house in the neighborhood. It's unknown why she picked this certain house. She slipped into the house, washed her clothes in the washing machine but left a pair of socks and panties, took a shower, put on a pair of the flannel pajamas she found in the house then napped in the guest bedroom.

When the woman, 72, who lived in the house with her husband, also 72, woke up she saw Rice, who told her she was sleepwalking. The older woman called her husband — who had left the house early to play golf — and demanded an explanation about the intruder, Davidson said.

When he came home, the husband insisted he wasn't having an affair with the intruder and had never seen her before. While all this was going on, deputies had gone to the house of John Willey, the man who left Rice at the store, Davidson said. Willey, who lives on Fountain Road, was alone.

Later that morning, just before noon, the older couple flagged down deputies and asked them if they were looking for a young woman. The couple told deputies they had driven the woman to a house on Fountain Road nearby, Davidson said. When deputies went back to Willey's residence, they saw Willey running out the back door, getting into a vehicle and driving off, he said. Rice was crouching on the floorboards of the vehicle, Davidson said. Both were arrested.

Willey, 25, was charged with being an accessory after the fact and harboring an escaped prisoner. Rice was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, retail theft, escape, burglary and petty theft.

When deputies retraced Rice's steps they also found discarded handcuffs, according to the Sheriff's Office. They also found two syringes on Rice and another in the car that contained methamphetamine residue.

The suspects were being held Monday at the Volusia County Jail. They were held without bail. Rice has an outstanding warrant from Osceola County for probation violation and grand theft, records show.
