Harrison Ford is set to earn more than £23 million for reprising his role as Han Solo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

The actor, 73, was paid £16.7 million for appearing in the film along with a 0.5 per cent share of the film’s gross earnings.

The blockbuster is expected to make at least £1.3 billion, which means his share could be worth £6.5 million, according to The Mail on Sunday.

His total pay out could be £23 million, which means he’ll be paid 76 times what newcomers Daisy Ridley and John Boyega will make.

Both stars got a £300,000 pay cheque and will take a cut of the box office earnings once it makes over $1 billion (£671 million).

A Disney source told the paper: ‘Harrison is the key to making this movie work. He’s the link between the old generation and the new. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were good to get, but the film could have lived without them. You couldn’t make it without Harrison Ford.

‘Daisy’s a virtual unknown, and this is a career-making role, so she’d probably have been willing to take it for free – and Disney knew it.

‘She has been signed to a multi-picture deal with pre-set bumps in her salary that rise substantially with each movie. That doesn’t guarantee she’ll be in subsequent films, but it gives the studio peace of mind to know she’s contractually obliged if they want her again.’

Carrie Fisher was paid £1 million for returning as General Leia while director JJ Abrams got £3.3 million along with a two per cent share of the film’s gross.

Ford was originally paid £7,000 for the original 1977 Star Wars film.

1/2 per cent and 2 per cent shares...that's the contract to have

Alec Guinness knew what was up in 1976, he took a percentage of the gate as well.
