A handmade submarine carrying three tonnes of cocaine has been found near the Galapagos Islands.
The sub, described by narcotics agents as a ‘handcrafted semi-submersible’, ran into mechanical problems off the coast of Ecuador
Agents from both Ecuador and Colombia had been pursuing the submarine, and eventually caught up with it near the Galapagos Islands.
Three crew members were arrested, Ecuadorian interior minister Jose Serrano said.
It is thought the submarine was bound for the US.
This is not the first time a submarine such as this has been discovered. A similar handmade ‘semi-submersible’ was found near Ecuador in September.
