Father-of-nine Alan Mckenzie was arrested mid-way through a lewd act on Clifton Downs.

Two women looking from their kitchen window in Clifton Down Road first spotted a seemingly naked man sitting on a bench near Bristol Zoo Gardens.

They called police, who found McKenzie performing a sex act and wearing just a pair of women's knickers, Bristol Crown Court heard.

He told them "I'm really sorry" before denying all in interview.

Mckenzie, 52, of Lena Street, Easton, pleaded guilty to exposure.

Judge Mark Horton handed him a 12 months' community order including a rehabilitation requirement for up to 40 days and 60 hours' unpaid work.

Mckenzie was told to register as a sex offender for five years.

The judge told him: "You have pleaded guilty to an offence which is completely alien to your previous life, and there has been and is no explanation given as to why you behaved in the way that you did."

The court heard Mckenzie didn't appear to approach anyone during the offence and there was no evidence he directed his activities to anyone or witnesses were damaged by what they saw.

As he left court Mckenzie told the Bristol Post: "I wish it never happened, it was just an unfortunate incident.

"I've got some sexual psychotherapy appointments made.

"I have a lot of family support."

Mark Hollier, prosecuting, said the two women spotted what appeared to be a naked man sat on a bench, who then stood up and went behind a tree.

When the women suspected the man of performing an act they called in police.

Investigations revealed Mckenzie was in possession of ladies underwear, pornographic magazines and lubricant, the court heard.

Though Mckenzie initially denied all he pleaded guilty to exposure at his first appearance at the crown court.

Giles Nelson, defending, said it was not clear neither to his client nor to a report writer why the offence was committed.

Mr Nelson said: "After the incident he went to his GP. To his credit he has lined up sexual psychotherapy through his GP."

Mr Nelson said Mckenzie had had a relationship split four years ago and had been trying to re-establish contact with his wife and children.

The court heard jobless Mckenzie did voluntary work every Tuesday at Bristol Drugs Project.

Mr Nelson added: "He is as much as a loss as we are as to why these offences occurred.

"He needs help and he's trying to get that help himself through his GP."
