A nine-year-old girl’s leg has been badly burned after her iPhone case began leaking acid.

Olivia Retter from Hertfordshire, has sadly been left scarred for life by the phone case – which has also left an imprint of an iPhone in third degree chemical burns. Olivia’s phone was resting on her leg as she slept in her bed, and shortly began leaking what her mother, Karly Retter, described to be acid.

When Olivia woke the following morning, she found her sore thigh looking excruciatingly red. After realising it the cause of the burns, Olivia inspected her phone – which was found to have allowed acid to leak through the edge of the phone, although the crack itself wasn’t visible.

Karly posted the photos on Facebook to express her horror.

It was made clear that it was the £5.99, New Look case alone that had caused the burns and that Apple were in no way at fault.

Olivia was rushed to the doctor by her alarmed mother, who confirmed that Olivia had suffered with severe chemical burns caused by acid. After being dressed and treated, she was told she will be left with the iPhone resembling mark for the rest of her life.

A spokesperson for New Look said: ‘New Look has spoken with the customer involved and takes complaints of this nature extremely seriously.

‘In line with our Health and Safety procedure, we have now instructed all stores to remove the product in question from the shop floor with immediate effect.

‘Our quality team have also begun an investigation with the supplier to understand and prevent this from happening in the future.’

Karly posted images of the burns to Facebook, to raise awareness of the incident, and to warn other parents who may be considering buying their children a liquid based glittery phone case, asking them to be aware of the danger that these cases can cause.

Her post has been shared over 40,000 times and has received many horrified responses offering advice on dealing with burns, and to express their disbelief at the situation.
