Mohammad Anwar, a 15-year-old boy in the Hujra Shah Muqeem district of Pakistan, cut off his own hand after mistakenly thinking he had committed blasphemy.

Local police chief Nosher Ahmed told Agence France-Presse on Jan. 15 that an imam asked residents at a mosque if they had stopped saying their prayers, and Anwar raised his hand because he misheard the question.

After being accused of blasphemy by fellow believers, Anwar went home and cut off the hand that he raised. He returned to the mosque to present his severed hand on a plate to the imam, according to police.

Ahmed described a video that shows the boy being greeted by happy villagers and his proud parents.

There will not be a police investigation because no complaint has been filed.

According to IslamWeb.net, there is a section in the Quran that includes cutting off the hand of someone who steals, but no mention of dismemberment for lack of praying: "[As for] the thief, the male and the female, amputate their hands in recompense for what they earned [i.e. committed] as a deterrent [punishment] from Allah. And Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. [Quran 5:38]"

Amputation for blasphemy is supported by some Islamic jurisprudence schools.
