Have any of you guys ever purchased a standalone battery charger, like these:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_1?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A15707061%2Ck%3Acar+battery+charger&keywords=car+battery+charger&ie=UTF8&qid=1453166642&rnid=2941120011&ajr=0

Or a battery jump starter, like these:

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_nr_n_0?fst=as%3Aoff&rh=n%3A15684181%2Cn%3A318336011%2Ck%3Acar+battery+ jump+starter&keywords=car+battery+jump+starter&ie=UTF8&qid=1453166694&rnid=15690151

?

Are they worth a damn?

:-k

Too late. I bought one. It was on sale for a limited time and I didn't have a whole lot of time to wait around for opinions. Some guys at auto forums I lurked at seem to think it's pretty good. Here's what I got:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000JFJLP6/ref=s9_simh_gw_g263_i3_r?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1YS3W1FB94R1SCHYH7V1&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

On sale for $99.

I had one of the jump start ones for car racing not that make but nice bit of kit, just remember to make sure you keep it charged up

They work just fine, we have one at work.

Like Red said, make sure to periodically charge it fully, they are easy to forget about just sitting in the trunk. I had one and when I went to use it...nada. Had been sitting too long and the battery would no longer take a charge. every few months pull it out and make sure it's fully charged and it should last for years.

We have a snap-on one at work, saves a lot of time and hassle

Yeah I looked at those. They're more expensive than what I bought.

The guts are probably the same but since it says "snap On" it's worth at least four times more.

You guys ever seen these things? They say they can charge your battery through your cigarette lighter?

i've seen them but never under stood them , i don't understand how the cable can be that thin compared to when you link 2 battery's together to start a car

It supposedly takes up to a half hour or more to get a charge comparable to the instantaneous jump from jumper cables.

I don't have one of those. However, they can work.

That's because of the lower amps going through otherwise you would blow the fuses.
I see them being useful to someone that sits in starbucks while waiting for AAA to come change their tire.

:dunno:

I don't drink coffee, and I'd rather not waste my AAA calls on something sitting in my driveway.

I could see it working if the battery was just a little too low to start but in the first vid they said he left his lights on while at work, I assume for 8 hours. That battery is stone dead and is not going to come back with enough juice to start with a 10 minute charge from that little thing.

I have one of these. I didn't believe in them till a buddy at work bought one. He bragged and bragged about it, how it's small and worked great. Start a car with a dead battery without any problem. So I went out and go one from Amazon and it does it's job. What's great about it too, is that it has two USB ports and I can charge the cell phone. I never had the need to yet, but it's capable. Under $100 bucks.

I jumped my neighbor's battery with it. It works fine. My neighbor says he's gonna get one now.
