The St. Paul, Minnesota Police Department has placed Sgt. Jeffrey M. Rothecker on leave while the department conducts an investigation into an alleged Facebook posting that told people to run over Black Lives Matter protesters.
Rothecker allegedly wrote how people could run over protesters on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and legally get away with it, notes the Pioneer Press.
The Facebook comment by "JM Roth" was originally flagged by Andrew Henderson on Jan. 16, who claimed to have evidence that JM Roth is Rothecker.
Henderson reported the posting to the St. Paul police on Jan. 17, and filmed himself doing it.
The Facebook posting was deleted, but Henderson took a screenshot of the posting that read: "Run them over. Keep traffic flowing and don't slow down for any of these idiots who try and block the street. Here is the deal, you continue to drive and if you hit someone make sure you call 911 to report the accident and meet the cops a block or two away and you can justify stopping further away because you feared for your safety since in the past people in this group has shown a propensity towards violence."
"Since they are trying to block the street and/or cross where there is no crossing you should not be charged with anything. Now, these idiots could try and sue you in civil court, but remember that it will be jury trial and so most likely it will come out in your favor."
The Pioneer Press reports there were two groups of Black Lives Matter protesters who briefly took over a local bridge on Jan. 18, which was Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
A group of protesters on the St. Paul side called for justice for Marcus Golden, who was killed by police in 2015. A second group, on the Minneapolis side of the bridge, demanded justice for Jamar Clark, who was fatally shot by police in 2015.
Rothecker has not issued a comment to the Pioneer Press, but the police department said on Jan. 18: "The statement (posted) is offensive, disappointing, concerning and does not reflect in any way -- or align with -- the views, values and practices of the St. Paul Police Department."
