Conspiracists claim this picture was not taken on Earth

And for once the conspiracy theorists are right.

These pictures showing a nice blue sky over a rocky ridge were not taken on Earth.

The images released by NASA are actually of the Red Planet Mars - which perhaps should be renamed the Blue Planet in light of the new evidence sent back from the Mars Spirt Rover probe.

The location of the shots was never in question, but the release of the pictures has fuelled a conspiracy their that claims we are being tricked into believing Mars is red when it is actually blue.

Scott C Waring, editor of UFO Sightings Daily, who often posts that he has found evidence of alien life in Nasa images sent back by its Curiosity Rover droid, is convinced the US space agency is digitally changing the colour of the pictures it releases to make them appear red.

In these images, the rocky surface has a shade of red but not the arid, blood red hue we’ve come to expect from previous images. It includes blue rocks and the overall colour could be described as grey.

He seized on these new pictures as a slip up by NASA and the first real images of Mars to come out.

A stunning blue sunset on Mars released by NASA last year

He said: "NASA normally puts 99% of Mars photos into black and white or false colour.

“False colour is often noted in their description of the photo, but more often not.

“False colour makes the planet look red, like dark soil from a garden bag.

“Here we have a normal view of Mars. The colours of the rocks very between white and blue.

“The sky blue and cloudless, although I have reported clouds in the sky of Mars in the past, so they do exist.

“The sky looks a lot like today’s sky on Earth.

“I just wanted to let you in on a little secret that NASA doesn't want you to know about, or to see.”

He did not go onto explain what the motive for NASA making people think Mars was red instead of blue would be.

However, he has previously said they try to obscure images of the so-called alien life he discovers.

So what is going on?

Well it appears there may well be as much blue on Mars as red after all.

Last spring NASA released images of what it called a blue sunset on Mars, and freely admitted the phenomenon happened.

In the summer there was a buzz online after the European Space Agency released satellite images of Mars which showed large blue spots - which some people suspected might be lakes.

But it turns out that was actually the real bed rock of Mars showing through.

So in reality, Most of Mars below the surface is blue.

Earlier images sent back by the Curiosity rover droid which is exploring the surface of Mars confirm this.

When ever it drills down below the dust that cokes up is often pale blue.

NASA has said the outer coating and surface colour is just that.
